A4A works differently from a traditional grant-funded lab. We keep overhead deliberately low and assemble project-bounded teams of senior researchers around specific programs, so more of every dollar goes to the work. Our operating stance for community-facing projects is augment, don't replace: strengthen trusted institutions rather than substitute for them.
Theodore Cochran, PhD - President and Chair
Ted's research is on how anyone knows whether an AI system is doing what its scores claim: measurement validity, calibration, and the reliability of the evaluations that safety and deployment decisions rest on. He spent three decades before A4A building decision-support systems in settings where a bad measurement produced consequences in the world rather than a footnote in a report.
The board governs under a written conflict-of-interest policy, financial controls with segregation of duties, and signed director commitment agreements. Corporate policies are published to sponsors and partners on request.
As its portfolio grows, A4A is recruiting independent directors with nonprofit finance, research-ethics, and community-partnership experience.
AI for Altruism (A4A) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
